For seven months now I’ve been here in Cusco. For most people this is just a fun place to stop on their way to Machu Picchu. But during all this time I watched the tourists come and go, telling me their stories and patiently waiting for my opportunity.
Finally it came and I was incredibly blessed to be able to share this experience with my mom and my little sister. We hiked up from Aguas Caliente starting before dawn, met our guide and toured the complex. It’s beyond grand and although throngs of tourists wander around each and every day it only felt crowded a couple of times.
Is it overrated? No, simply no. Overpriced is a different story, but all the hype I’ve heard, all the ennoblement that seems to be an incorporated part of Cusco came to fruition, to be something beyond real and I was so overjoyed to have made it at last.
Trekking up Huayna Picchu was also good fun. Ascending up incredibly steep stairs, past walls, structures and even more terraces my awe was renewed and my thoughts drifted to wonder more about this lost ancient and sacred sight.
With such perfect lighting I couldn’t help but take that classic photo.
