Alaska: The Wildness in Us All

As the season begins to wrap up, I’ve been evaluating some fundamental themes. I’ve been reviewing what I’ve learned from a summer on Aialik. I’ve been thinking back over meaningful interactions with the wilderness and the people who pass through here.

For so many people Alaska is a bucket list destination. It’s a place that people dream of coming for years, and when I ask my guests and clients, “What made you want to come to Alaska?” I usually get overarching answers like; “I’ve just always wanted to come here,” and “Ever since I was a kid I’ve dreamed of coming to Alaska.”

Well, me too. What about the mere thought of Alaska draws people in so profoundly? The very word “Alaska,” has an inherent wildness to it that’s hard to explain. Maybe it’s a few decades of good marketing, or maybe it’s the perpetual creation of stunning nature documentaries. Could be, however I’d like to believe that it’s the vivacious idea of wilderness itself that speaks to our subconscious human wildness.

People come here for brief stints of five days, ten days, two weeks, whatever length of time and they just want to see “it all.” Alaska is maybe the best place for an outdoors oriented vacation, and in such a brief taster it is not only possible, but extremely likely to see so much: sweeping mountain vistas, splendid wildlife, wildflowers, and wilderness at its finest. A tour from Denali to the Kenai Fjords will take you from Tundra to Temperate Rainforest, from Brown Bears to Killer Whales, From Cold Tempest Winds to Tidewater Glaciers.

Have you always wanted to come to Alaska? If you haven't been here yet, don't take my word for it. This is a place you can only truly experience in person. So dawn your boots and rain jacket and get up here already.
