Getting to and Climbing the Observation Tower
***All information is valid as of 03/2017***
By far the most famous attraction in Nazca are the Nazca Lines. Ancient geoglyphs drawn on the desert ground, some stretching well over 150 meters long, their purpose remains a mystery and puzzles academics and visitors alike.
The most common way to see the glyphs is by flying over them in a small airplane, but of course this is expensive. I saw advertisements and was offered flyovers for prices between $80 and $100 USD, and when asked they then revealed that the airport tax of
S/. 30 | $9.25 was not included. Making this clearly not an option for those on a budget. However there is another option – climbing the observation tower.
Located about 20 minutes outside of town on the highway towards Ica, the observation tower costs only S/. 3 | 90c to climb. From the top you can see two of the smaller glyphs, but get a good idea of what they might look like from higher above.
To get there, go to the Soyuz/Peru Bus office main bus terminal on Calle Lima. Get your bus ticket bus heading towards Ica for S/. 3 | 90c, be sure to specify you are only going to “El Mirador,” and remind the driver or attendant when you board the bus. The bus will drop you off directly at the Observation Tower. The buses from here leave frequently throughout the day, ours was at 11:00 am.
Pay S/. 3 | 90c more soles entrance fee and climb the tower, then if you feel like a short walk its about 15 minutes to a natural mirador. Simply walk back down the road towards Nazca, there is a small hill just to the right of the road which you can walk up, the trail is very obvious. From here or back at the tower you can flag down any bus heading to Nazca, the fare should once again be S/. 3 | 90c.
A savvy traveler could stop on their way in from, or heading towards Ica.
